Toyota Corolla Oil Type

Toyota Service & Parts

Toyota vehicles are well-known for reliability and longevity on the Dixon roads, and proper maintenance will keep your Corolla running smoothly for miles to come. But if you want the best results, what is the recommended Toyota Corolla oil type? Most Corolla models use either 0W-20 synthetic or 5W-30 synthetic formulations. Hanlees Davis Toyota is here to go over the correct Toyota Corolla oil type for different model years, while also shedding some light on why synthetic oil is the better choice over conventional. Let’s get started!

Toyota Corolla Oil Type by Model Year

Toyota is constantly innovating, so each generation of Corolla is a little different. Models made earlier than 2008 should use 5W-30 synthetic, while models from 2009 onward should use 0W-20 synthetic instead. Whether driving through hot summers in Sacramento or mild winters in Woodland, these formulas will maximize efficiency and power out of the engine. And while you can use any brand, we recommend and use genuine Toyota-branded motor oil. Toyota motor oils use special additives that are designed to bring out the best in your Corolla.

Synthetic vs. Conventional Oil: What’s the Difference?

Now you know the best Toyota Corolla oil type, but what’s synthetic oil anyway?

  • Both synthetic and conventional oil are refined from crude oil. Synthetic is refined even more to create a faster flowing, more chemically stable formula.
  • Because conventional oil flows slower, it can be beneficial for older cars that need more protection and lubrication. But, it must be replaced more frequently when compared to synthetic.
  • Most engines perform well with the faster flowing synthetic oil. A study by the American Automobile Association (AAA) found that synthetic oils outperformed conventional oils by an average of 47 percent.

Toyota Corolla Oil Change Interval

When should you change the oil in your Toyota Corolla? If you use conventional oil, aim for every six months or 5,000 miles. If you use synthetic oil, you can usually stretch that interval to every 7,500 miles or so. Be sure to check your owner’s manual for specifics — or just ask our technicians for more service tips!
